There’s no denying the Delines’ cult-hero pedigree. That includes former Richmond Fontaine members Sean Oldham, Freddy Trujillo and Willy Vlautin and Damnations vocalist Amy Boone, the Portland-based quintet actually qualifies as an Americana supergroup—one which’s discovered a passionate fanbase over the previous decade, significantly in Europe and among the many British press.
“The Haunting Ideas” is the brand new single from the Delines’ fifth LP, Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom (Jealous Butcher/El Cortez), a dusky nation/soul masterpiece due February 14. It was written by Vlautin, an creator with seven books to his credit score. The Motel Life and Lean On Pete have already been made into characteristic movies, and a Netflix thriller primarily based on his 2021 novel, The Evening At all times Comes, is at the moment in manufacturing. Maybe not surprisingly, “The Haunting Ideas” has a film-noir really feel. “It’s a few lady who can’t shake the concern that the world she’s in goes to break down,” says Vlautin. “She sees all this desperation round her, and she or he’s frightened it’ll catch her, too—that she’ll find yourself on the streets. We needed that uncertainty and vulnerability inside the material of the tune. It’s a type of uncommon tunes that labored from the get-go—it simply performed itself. Cory’s piano is so nice, and it’s my favourite Amy vocal to this point. She has this pure manner of getting contained in the world of the lyrics. She simply kills me on this one.”
For a becoming visualization of the tune’s simmering unease, filmmakers Greg Schmitt and Efrem Peters turned to the streets of their hometown.
“Portland has such an edge to it proper now, with so many individuals residing on the streets, in automobiles and broken-down RVs, and in tents,” says Vlautin. “I’m endlessly heartbroken by it—and in addition scared shitless that it could possibly be me at some point.”
