Full Album Stream: Cwfen –Sorrows

Seize an earful of the bewitching debut, Sorrows, from Scottish gothic doom outfit, Cwfen (pronounced “coven”). This feminine-fronted quartet—Agnes Alder (vocals/rhythm guitar), Man DeNuit (lead guitar/backing vocals), Rös Ranquinn (drums), Mary Thomas Baker (bass)—has mined the sad gloom of Kind O Unfavorable and swirled it along with some post-metal spaciousness and basic UK doom. Sorrows is at turns rage-filled, hypnotic and eternally darkish. There’s lots taking place in a mere 10 tracks.

Sorrows was produced by Cwfen and Kevin Hare at Deep Storm Productions, and it was mastered by James Plotkin. It’s set for launch on vinyl, CD and digitally on Could 30 by way of New Heavy Sounds. Place your order right here or right here. Additionally, if you happen to stay within the UK, try the upcoming stay dates in June with L.A. doom trio Faetooth (listed beneath the Bandcamp participant).

Vocalist/guitarist Agnes Alder had this to say about Sorrows:

Sorrows comes from a spot of contrasts. Feral and tender, expansive and restrained. Cwfen have all the time been drawn to that rigidity: melody and weight, magnificence and collapse. That’s been formed by our stay performances, and an depth and rawness that may simply disappear within the studio. Capturing that was necessary to us. There are components of doom, post-metal, and shoegaze in it, however we by no means got down to write to a style. We simply adopted what felt trustworthy and that is what got here out. The guitars are thick and textured, generally glacial, generally hovering, whereas the rhythm part provides the entire report its backbone. Insistent, driving and deliberate, including heft and weight. Vocals had been recorded handheld and in movement, pacing, crouching, reaching, as a result of singing by no means felt like a static act. It wanted to maneuver, to breathe, to unravel. There’s grief on this report, but in addition reverence, awe, and area. We weren’t aiming for perfection. We simply wished to make one thing that felt lived-in, emotionally true, and able to holding quiet as a lot as noise. One thing that leaves a mark.”
