“I needed to create a video that matched the nostalgic, bittersweet undertones of the music,” says Kendra Morris of the homespun clip that accompanies her newest single. “I blended up the media utilizing layers of analog stop-motion animation for the letters, the lyrics—on pocket book paper—and the flitting butterflies. I additionally used archival footage from the ’70s and even snuck in a pair clips of my very own buddy.”
“Expensive Buddy” is the type of satisfying, age-defying slice of classic soul that wouldn’t have sounded too misplaced on the New York Metropolis-based singer/songwriter’s solo LPs for the Wax Poetics imprint. And even on her most up-to-date work with longtime collaborator Jeremy Web page and producer Little Shalimar (Run The Jewels). A colourful raconteur, Morris has the type of innate vocal depth that’s drawn comparisons to Amy Winehouse. She grew up in a St. Petersburg, Fla., family seeped in late-’60s/early-’70s soul, R&B and funk. And to be sincere, “Expensive Buddy” sounds prefer it might’ve been an unearthed treasure from her mother and father’ vinyl assortment.
“After I write songs, I really feel related visually to them,” says Morris, who’s additionally an achieved animator and videographer. “‘Expensive Buddy’ may be very particular to me. And the video got here to me effortlessly, as if it was prepared so as to add to the story by itself.”
